Minoxidil, also known as styridine or styridine, is an organic compound. Its chemical name is 6-(1-piperidinyl)-2,4-pyrimidinediamine-3-oxide, with the chemical formula C9H15N5O, and a molecular weight of approximately 209.25. It is a white or off-white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in ethanol, sparingly soluble in water, very slightly soluble in acetone, and soluble in glacial acetic acid.
Minoxidil may occasionally cause local irritation and allergic contact dermatitis when used topically. When taken orally, patients with hypertension may experience more severe side effects such as reflex tachycardia, edema, and temporary T-wave changes on electrocardiogram. Patients with normal blood pressure may also experience discomfort such as periorbital edema and finger swelling, which can be relieved by a low-salt diet.
