Products Description
Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic \beta-lactam antibiotic that is a member of the penicillin family. It is one of the most used antibacterial drugs in veterinary medicine because of its superior tissue penetration and high bioavailability.
Chemical Class: Aminopenicillin.
- Mechanism of Action: By preventing peptidoglycan from cross-linking, it compromises the structural integrity of bacterial cell walls. This results in the bacteria rupturing and dying during the phase of development and division (bactericidal activity).
- Antibacterial Spectrum: Effective against a number of Gram-negative bacteria, including E. coli, Pasteurella, and Salmonella, as well as the majority of Gram-positive bacteria, including Streptococcus and Staphylococcus.
Certificate of analyze Product name Amoxicillin CAS NO. 61336-70-7 Molecular formula C16H19N3O5S · 3H2O Appearance White to off-white solid Assay Typically 95.0%–102.0% (anhydrous basis) or 900g/mg. Identification (IR/LCMS) Consistent with structure. Water Content (Karl Fischer) 11.5%–14.5% (consistent with trihydrate form) pH

Function & Uses
In therapeutic settings, amoxicillin is used to treat a variety of infections brought on by susceptible bacteria:
- Respiratory infections include shipping fever (pasteurellosis) in cattle, infectious coryza in chickens, and pleuropneumonia in pigs.
- Salmonellosis and E. Coli diarrhea are examples of gastrointestinal infections.
- Endometritis, mastitis, and postpartum infections in cattle are examples of urogenital infections.
- Foot rot and wound infections are examples of skin and soft tissue infections.
- Systemic infections include septicemia and streptococcosis in pigs.
Dosage & Administration
Active Ingredient is used to list dosages. It is frequently used in veterinary medicine as either Amoxicillin Injection (IM/SC) or Amoxicillin Soluble Powder (for water/feed).
A. Poultry (Chickens, Turkeys)
Used for salpingitis, colibacillosis (E. coli), and pullorum disease.
- Drinking Water: 10 – 20 mg/kg body weight.
Practical Guide: Typically 0.5g – 1g of a 10% soluble powder per 1L of water for 3–5 days.
- Mixed Feed: 200 – 400 mg per kg of feed.
B. Swine
Dosages are listed using the active ingredient. In veterinary medicine, it is commonly administered as either Amoxicillin Soluble Powder (for water/feed) or Amoxicillin Injection (IM/SC).
- Water/Feed: 10 – 15 mg/kg body weight, twice daily for 3–5 days.
- Intramuscular (IM) Injection: 7 – 15 mg/kg body weight, once daily.
C. Cattle & Sheep
Used for pneumonia, hemorrhagic septicemia, and mastitis.
- Oral: 10 mg/kg body weight (only for pre-ruminant calves and lambs).
Note: Use injections instead of oral administration because it disturbs the rumen flora in mature ruminants.
- IM/SC Injection: once daily for three to five days at a dose of seven to ten mg/kg body weight.
Critical Precautions
A. Resistance & Drug Combinations
- Beta-lactamase Resistance: Penicillinase, an enzyme produced by many bacteria, deactivates amoxicillin. It is frequently used in conjunction with clavulanate potassium, which inhibits these enzymes and restores effectiveness, to combat this.
- Incompatibility: Because it is a bactericidal agent that targets the growth phase, it should not be administered with bacteriostatic medications like tetracyclines or erythromycin because they may counteract its effects.
B. Safety & Contraindications
- Ruminant Restriction: Because it might result in severe gastrointestinal dysbiosis, it should never be given orally to adult sheep or cattle.
- Species Sensitivity: Oral administration can cause possibly fatal colitis; use with extreme caution in horses and rabbits.
- Withdrawal Period*Meat: Depending on the particular product formulation, withdrawal periods typically range from 7 to 28 days.
*Milk: Typically 48 – 96 hours.
