In cyanobacteria and marine bacteria, 2-AEP can serve as an alternative phosphorus source. Its degradation depends on the phosphonate oxygenase (PhnY*Z) pathway, releasing phosphorus through amino transfer and C-P bond cleavage. Related gene expression is induced by low-phosphorus environments.
